Congratulations to Carlos S. Alvarado, who has been selected to receive the PA's 2017 Outstanding Career Award. This award goes to a PA professional or associate member to recognize sustained research or service contributions that have advanced the discipline of parapsychology.

Carlos S. Alvarado has a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Edinburgh, and holds masters degrees in parapsychology (John F. Kennedy University), and in history (Duke University). Dr. Alvarado is currently a Research Fellow at the Parapsychology Foundation. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Scientific Exploration and a past President of the Parapsychological Association. He also holds an Adjunct Research Faculty appointment at Sofia University (formerly Institute of Transpersonal Psychology). He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Near-Death Studies and the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Scientific Exploration.

Alvarado’s work has centered on survey research (on out-of-body experiences and other psychic experiences) and studies about the history of psychical research. He is the recipient of the 2010 Parapsychological Association’s Outstanding Contribution Award and was the Program Chair for the Association’s 2012 convention. In 2010, he was awarded the Harold and Sherry Crasilneck Award for Best First Paper on Hypnosis published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis.

In recent years he has taught online parapsychology courses for the Parapsychology Foundation. This includes an introduction to parapsychology, and courses about mediumship, precognition, and out of body and near-death experiences. He is one of the editors of Research in Parapsychology 1993, and has authored over 250 papers in history, psychology, psychiatry, and parapsychology journals. Some of his recent publications about topics related to survival of death are: "A review of qualitative mediumship research" in A. Rock (Ed.), The Survival Hypothesis: Essays on Mediumship; "Mediumship and psychical research" in C. Moreman (Ed.), The Spiritualist Movement (Vol. 2); and "Psychic phenomena and the mind-body problem: Historical notes on a neglected conceptual tradition" in A. Moreira-Almeida and F.S. Santos (Eds.), Exploring Frontiers of the Mind-Brain Relationship. 

He is also the author of booklets for introducing parapsychology to the general public: Getting Started in Parapsychology and Apuntes para una Introducción a la Parapsicología, both published by the Parapsychology Foundation.

For many decades Dr. Alvarado has been an ambassador of parapsychology to other scholarly disciplines, as his scientific and scholarly work has been published in numerous journals in history, psychology, psychiatry, as well as parapsychology. He has also been a leading light in carrying the field beyond the bounds of the English-speaking world with his translations, and tireless professional work crossing many boundaries of culture and language.
