Bob Morris had held the Koestler Chair of Parapsychology at the University of Edinburgh since 1985. He headed the Koestler Parapsychology Unit, located within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. Bob was interested in anomalies and the problems scientist have in dealing with them since he was in high school. He received a BSc in Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1963 and a PhD in Psychology (minor in Zoology) from Duke University in 1969. During this he also worked summers at the Rhine Research Center, known as the FRNM at that time. He did postdoctoral research on avian social behavior in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development at Duke for two years and then worked with William Roll at the Psychical Research Foundation until 1974.
From 1974-1978 he was a Lecturer in Parapsychology within the Tutorial Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Next stop, from 1978-1980, was as a Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, University of California, Irvine. Finally, from 1980-1985, he was Senior Research Scientist, School of Computer and Information Science, Syracuse University, before taking up his post at Edinburgh. He has held several offices in the Parapsychological Association and was President in 1974 and 1985. Bob was PA representative to the American Association for the Advancement of Science for several years and was President of the Psychology Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a Vice-President of the Society for Psychical Research and served on the Board of the Rhine Research Center as well as the Scientific Board of the Bial Foundation.
Bob enjoyed teaching and had designed over twenty different courses in aspects of psychology for the various universities at which he taught. At Edinburgh he supervised many young researchers working towards their doctorates (eighteen completions at last look) and organized an MSc by Research, for Psychology postgraduates; at the undergraduate level he supervised over a hundred Honours Dissertations. He taught a course in the Psychology of Anomalous Experience and offered lectures in a variety of other courses.
Bob's academic interests included parapsychology in general, the psychological aspects of the conduct of science, anomalous experiences, deception, belief formation and maintenance, crosscultural aspects of psi experience and research, sport psychology, and volition and human performance. In the past he had also been active in human factors and animal behavior research.
